Favourites found this week

Here are a few of the best things we’ve found this week in the world of art, design, branding, or great ideas in general.

This a fantastic new ‘film for computer’ was created by Vincent Morriset, who has worked previously with Arcade Fire. Click the image above to link to the film Bla Bla, and use your mouse to control what happens. I started to really feel for the little guy on screen, who can give  you a rather damning look if you stop playing with him, or do something annoying like make his head spin too fast. Here are some stills from the film:

Ice cream vans of distinction

Thanks Iona to pointing out these wonderful ice cream vans of the world. Or should it be called Pimp My Ice Cream Van? Some lovely and inspiring designs that just make you want to order a double scoop mint choc chip cone with raspberry sauce and a Flake. Found via Aesthetics of Joy and also Let’s Colour Project.

Clerkenwell Design Week

There has been a great buzz in the air this week around our London office, for Clerkenwell Design Week. This four day event celebrates all disciplines of design, with over 150 events including popups, installations, talks, music and workshops. The most talked about seemed to be the Lulu Guinness ‘Be a Pin Up’ competition, which got some brilliant results – see more image on the Lulu Guinness blog.

Chris went down to the House of Detention, the remaining underground section of a somewhat haunting Victorian prison that was transformed into a gallery for the past week (for the first time in 11 years). Descending into the ventilation corridor the air turned eerily cool and damp. It was a strange combination of spooky history and vibrant modernism. Each cell bled vivid light in the corridor, drawing people in in anticipation of what was lurking inside. Among his top rated exhibits were some fine lighting design, canvases graffitied with prior visitors, and furniture that makes music when you sit on it. It was a really great experience. And thankfully no sign of any ghostly Victorian inmates!
